ADMISION TO THE DOCTORAL PROGRAM


Body holding the admision process

The Academic Committee of the doctoral program is the body holding the selection of candidates.

Documentation to be submitte

  • CV of the candidate. Simple copies of the alleged merits are compulsory.
  • Motivation letter, indicating at least:
    • Research lines of interest.
    • Future professional expectations related to this doctorate studies.
    • Economical support already obtained or expected to be obtained (national, local or private grants, etc.)

Assessment of applications. Evaluation criteria

Applications are assessed according to four criteria:

I. The degree of adequacy between the master’s studies of the applicant and the research lines of the program selected by the candidate (2 points).

II. Personal interview with a member of the doctoral program. This member is proposed by the Academic Committee from the academic staff of the program. (2 points).

III. Language skills, particularly in English. It is highly recommended to accredit at least a CFER B2 level or its equivalent (1 point).

IV. Evaluation of the CV (5 points). The Curriculum Vitae must show:

  • The academic records of the applicant.
  • In particular, the academic records of the master’s degree that is providing access to the doctoral program .
  • Any previous experience related to the research fields selected by the candidate.
  • Any previous mobility experience.
  • Grants, awards, etc. received, as long as they are related to the lines of research of the program..
  • Any other merit that can be considered of interest.

Minimum requirements for admission to the Doctoral Program

The Academic Committee is meets twice a year (October and March) for assessing the applications and deciding about the admission of the candidates. The resolution is a list where candidates are sorted by the score obtained according to the four criteria indicated above. Moreover, the score of applicants must overcome the following conditions:

  • Minimum passing score of criterion I is 1 point.
  • Minimum passing score of criteria I + II has to be is 2.5 points.
  • Minimum passing score of criterion III is 0.5 points.
  • Minimum passing score of criterion IV is 2.5 points.

The personal interview

The personal interview is a determining element in the admission process, particularly for those students that do not have a direct access to the program.

The interview is made with the coordinator or with an expert researcher in the field selected by the applicant. The candidate's academic documentation will be reviewed, as well as the motivation letter, which is fundamental for the supervisor's assignment. Interests and expectations should be expressed carefully. Should the applicant be admitted to the program, the candidate will be assigned to the line of research of the interviewer and will be assigned a supervisor expert in this same line.

El director que se nombre para la tesis pertenecerá a esa misma línea de investigación, en la que el alumno deberá desarrollar su tesis doctoral.

The list of admitted candidates

The lists with the results of the admission process are published by the Doctoral School of the University of Cantabria (EDUC) at the beginning of November and April.
